5 Things to see or do on a layover to Malta

Malta, a tiny rock in the mediteranean sea.
An island that is about 30 km long. But lovely places to see.

As Malta is central to go from Europe, to Africa or Asia, lots of traveller end up having a layover here. Why not just enjoy while you are here anyways?

1) Valletta/Sliema/3 cities
Valletta, the capital of Malta, is very accessible. Every bus ands and starts there. Valletta has 2 main streets en a lot of small beautiful streets. Wander around in all directions.
3 cities has the small picturesque streets where you can wander around and get lost.
From Valletta is is very easy to take a ferry towards Sliema or 3 cities. Sliema has more youth, lots of food opportunities, beach, outdoor gym,...
Perfect to spend a day on these 3 places.

2) Blue Grotto

Blue grotto is very nice by sunrise or sunset. If the sun is on point, you can see the nice blue water in the cave. You have 2 options to see Blue grotto; Either you go on a boat (8 euros) or you walk up and enjoy the nice view. Up is also a bus stop with your buses from and towards Valletta. If you can't get enough of the view, you can take a bus towards Dingli Cliffs. You can see the cliffs and enjoy the view on the ocean.

3) Marsaskala/Marsaxlokk

These 2 are easily to combine. Both have the picturesque boats on the water. In Marsaskala you also have an abandoned hotel. If you love to find some Graffiti , this is your stop. Both cities have nice places along the coastline to sit, to enjoy, to eat or to drink.
In Marsaxlokk, there is a market every Sunday. The market can be a little busy tough.
Both fishermen towns are really recommendable.

4) Gozo

Gozo is a smaller island. It has a "capital city", Victoria. All buses on the island go there. Most people go from the ferry to Victoria and from there on they go somewhere else. At the North-West of the island, there is a heritage trail. It goes next to cliffs and gives you amazing views. If you love hiking, this is a must. The island also has some bays you can go to for relaxing and swimming. I definitely would advice 2 days for this island, but with 1 day, you also can do a lot.

5) Mdina

Mdina is centraly based on the island. You can take buses from Valletta. Close to Mdina you also have Craft village. This is the perfect daytrip to do. Quiet and easy walk around in the smaller streets of Mdina. Some sightseeing. Perfect for a relaxing day.
In Mdina, you should also definitely try the typical cake.

If you stay in Malta for a longer period. I suggest you to look at my other blogpost about the small island. => Malta: One of those little things to enjoy.
